My dad’s cancer is terminal and I’m getting married…

by: JJ on Wed, Sep 05 2007

Well, this is our story…. My dad was planned to retire from his job as a waiter after 47 years service last January 2006. He had been feeling very unwell for about five months previous and it turned out he had kidney cancer…it was localized, he had his right kidney removed and he made a great recovery with no further treatments.

After this scare, myself and my partner of 6 years, decided to set a wedding date, as the incident reinforced for us that life was precious and we needed to seize the moment….so we set it for October 2007. My partner had already lost both of his parents to cancer, his father dying when my father was operated on the first time.

As is routine after cancer,my dad had frequent check-ups. The one in November 2006 showed a shadow on his left lung…it turned out to be the dreaded cancer again….

Unfortunately, they left it until the middle of March before operating and it had grown in size, considerably. This meant he had to have over half the lung removed. His recovery was slow….then a scan in July revealed that it was spreading to his ribs…

My God…the tears haven’t stopped flowing this year. I myself have had some problems and as a result am out of work at the moment, which is putting more strain on my partner and my remaining sanity….

So, my dad is now at a stage where they have decided that no further treatment is available…he is on morphine and appetite enhancing tablets. My poor mother is trying to keep it all together …. and me, I have a wedding to plan…

My dad wants to walk me down the aisle…and all I keep thinking is how the hell am I going to stop breaking down on the so called happiest day of our lives………….My dad is such a trooper but is in a lot of pain….as I write this I am starting to cry again…I want to be strong, for both my parents…If i could I would cancel the wedding tomorrow.

What do you say when everyone that you meet says… So bet you are all exceited about your big day…or Where you going on Honeymoon…It makes me want to scream at these people that mean well…

ALL I WANT Is MY DAD TO FEEL NO PAIN, WALK ME DOWN THE AISLE AND for me, NOT TO BURST INTO TEARS IN FRONT OF HIM… thats what i want for OUR So called SPECIAL DAY…Oh my God, this is madness …..

  • Oh What a Tuesday! - by Debbie - (Wed, Sep 05 2007)
I woke up one September morning, 1998, with a huge lump on the left side of my neck. I decided to make a doctor’s appointment just to keep my parents from telling me to. Now you must remember, I was 34 years old. The doctor could see me that day. He decided something with my thyroid was not right and he ordered a CT scan. The scan was schedule for the next day–which was a Tuesday! [more..]
